Joshua R. Rich, a partner in Lippes Mathias LLP’s Chicago office and a member of the firm’s intellectual property practice team, participated as a panelist at the Biotechnology Innovation Organization’s 2025 Intellectual Property Conference, held November 17–19 in Palm Springs, California.

Rich’s panel, Using AI in Patent Practice: Practical and Ethical Issues, took place on Wednesday, November 19, and examined how artificial intelligence is reshaping the patent profession. Topics covered included whether AI should be viewed as a tool to replace or augment patent practitioners, an overview of current AI tools used in patent prosecution and research, ethical obligations related to AI use, and examples of practitioner missteps in navigating the evolving AI landscape.

The BIO IP Conference is the only event dedicated exclusively to intellectual property in the biotechnology industry. It provides attendees with the latest insights from IP professionals across the field, along with networking opportunities to foster collaboration and practical knowledge exchange. The 2025 conference welcomed both BIO members and non-members with an interest in intellectual property rights.
